Locating your ECU Box with VCDS
Every Engine Control Unit (ECU) has what's known as a Box Code and Revision. This number indicates which factory version of software is on your ECU. With this information, we can check compatibility of available features and files for your exact ECU. To find this information, you can use a VAG-Com/VCDS OBD-II dongle, or other devices such as ODIS or OBDEleven. Start by plugging in the cable, then turn the key to the on position and launch the program.
Vag-Com / VCDS Method 1:
- Plug in the dongle
- Turn on the ignition (engine doesn't need to be on)
- Launch the program
- Click "Select" under "Select Control Module"
- Click "01-Engine"
- Your box code is the "VAG Number" and the revision is the last 4 digits under "Component"
Vag-Com / VCDS Method 2 (From a saved fault code read out):
Address 01: Engine Labels: 06J-906-026-CCT.clb

Software Coding: 0403010A18070160
